This is an interesting story out of California. There are times when there’s real political advantage from holding out a helping hand. So it was for Democrat Representative Lois Capps of Santa Barbara when a drunk driver crashed into a car being driven by her husband. She hired a hit-and-run driver on to her staff and went for the sympathy vote. Unfortunately, Raymond Victor Morua has killed a woman.
Last week, he was drunk driving and hit Mallory Rae Dies. His blood alcohol concentration was 0.17 which is twice the legal limit. To make matters worse, he fled the scene. After five days on life support, Ms Dies’ relatives switched off the life-support machines. Morua has now been charged with gross vehicular manslaughter although this could be increased to second-degree murder.
This man’s criminal record is genuinely surprising. He’s twice been convicted of DUI, and has a previous hit-and-run conviction. He was also jailed for grand theft by embezzlement. Congresswoman Capps office has now terminated Morua as an employee, denying it had done a complete background check. This is strange since his record was featured so strongly during the last election.
